He had failed to keep his unspoken promise to his mother. (unless this is not actually the intended purpose of the flashback but it really seems that way to me), it’s just used much earlier here. It’s super cool that the anime actually considers it’s own continuity when adaptions very often don’t and when there was a change, they just gloss it over - in light of the recap in the beginning of the episode showing that moment of him turning into a monster, the flashback actually has a very similar purpose to when it’s used in the manga in chapter 50 I thought putting the flashback with Eren’s mother here was interesting when considering the season finale of season 1 - it’s after the big failure of turning into a monster - a reminder of how “weak” he is. This is the first of scenes to showcase her capability as a figure of authority and leader, but also adds more humanity to her by having her show fear for the first time within the story. Before this she had her focus episode in episode 15, which had the first moments of her showing character beyond being comic relief, but for the most part she was still comic relief. I’ve always liked the scene with Hange because it humanized her some more. Mike’s death was excellent, too, but I’ve always had my issues with that. Hange’s declaration of frustration and fear, Eren remembering his mother’s words and the scene with Mikasa that follows and the scene with the 104th in particular stood out.

Everything else was excellent, too, but that stood out to me the most. I think the character stuff stood out to me the most this episode. I recommend anime-only viewers to look away.
